Besides looking and sounding absolutely beautiful, fountains help rejuvenate and refresh us, creating a relaxing ambiance. Some examples of where you can use a tabletop fountain: * Put one in the office. Don't be surprised how the atmosphere transforms into a pleasant one, for your customers too. * Give one as a gift to an elderly friend or family member. The health benefits are worth it and you don't have to take your fountain out for a walk! * Fountains teach young children (on a small scale) about nature. These make great school projects full of creativity and bubbling water. Here's what you need: 1. Collect ideas for your tabletop fountain. Notice the way rocks look in natural streams and pools - or pull an original design right out of your imagination. 2. Start at the bottom, with a container large enough to hold all the rocks, ornaments, plants - and water! I've seen a fountain created from Home & Garden Party's Country Garden serving bowls and stand that was pretty terrific. 3. Find rocks or other ornaments for the water to flow over. Depending on the container's size, you could even use a resin statue from the HGP garden line. Now is the time to use those stones or shells you collected just because you liked them. If you don't have enough items for the fountain, collect more or buy smooth river rocks from a garden center. 4. Choose a small pump. Buy plastic tubing to carry water into the fountain and to direct the flow. Want to include a small light? 5. Block out an hour or so of unhurried time to experiment with the fountain elements. Find a pleasing arrangement of look and water flow. This is the fun part of creating your fountain. 6. Make sure your arrangement allows water to trickle and splash over the rocks or other ornaments - but not out of the container and onto furniture or carpeting. Adjustment in the angle of the materials will fix this problem. 7. Pick a spot to display your fountain. If it's a wooden tabletop, make sure it's protected from spills and humidity. Perhaps use a piece of tabletop glass to protect furniture. Place plants or more stones in a semicircle around the back of the fountain to hide the pump's cord. 8. Adding scented oil to your fountain is not only pleasant but makes for a romantic atmosphere! This will not hurt your pump either. Try several of the scents HGP carries for the Fragrance Lamps. Now you can enjoy pretty smells wherever you put your fountain. Tips: A tabletop fountain's look is limited only by your imagination. It doesn't have to be made of rocks or shells. For a more contemporary look, direct the water over pieces of rusted metal or shards of china plates. Check the water level daily, as much water can evaporate. The fountain needs to be full for the pump to operate efficiently. Clean the bottom of the fountain and the stones with a meat baster every one or two weeks. Use a few drops of bleach or bacteriostat (used for humidifiers) to rid the fountain of algae. Use food coloring to add a bit of color. Enjoy! ========================= CONTEST: This month I'm giving away a retired "Wild Blue Yonder" blue 10 oz. Soy Candle ($14.00 value).
