Tip of the Month

Having a warm & cozy spot to snuggle up is important as
well as renewing. Creating intimacy in your home, or at
least in one area of your home, requires a little
imagination and some gut feelings. How does your family
room or sunroom make you feel when you walk into it? Are
the colors inviting? Is there comfortable seating? Winter
is the best time to paint and spruce up your rooms because
you can take advantage of all the white sales…

Invest in a warm color for your walls, inexpensive
draperies on simple pole rods with classy finials and a
chenille throw (and maybe even a “bear” rug!). Move your
main chair close to the couch, add some lovely greenery
items, candles and statuary to the coffee table and you’re
set! My favorites this month are shown below. If you’d
like me to make a “house call” to help with this process,
please contact me. Enjoy!

Peony/Hyacinth Arrangement. This is what we refer to as
the simplest form of floral design. The pink blossom stem
which spikes out of the mass of the arrangement makes this
an instant floral arrangement. It is proportioned perfectly
for our new 31103 Portico Tall Vase.

Star Ivy Topiary. This is a unique and versatile topiary
made from our popular star ivy around a metal tree shaped
skeleton. It has a wooden planter box and a metal fleur de
lis finial at the top of the topiary. This classic designed
piece can have many uses in your home.

Sedona Bowl & Holder. Fill this beautiful bowl with fresh
fruit or pinecones for an awesome display. It is a thick
textured glass and has a golden bronze curly metal stand.

Pyramid Accent Shelf. This is an extremely versatile
pyramid-shaped piece with three shelves. It has stained
wooden shelves, a black metal frame and a top adorned with
a steeple type ornament. This can be used on the floor
beside a chair or on a tabletop such as a buffet or entry
table for either functional or decorative purposes.

Creating a Conversation Group

Large living rooms and cozy gatherings can coexist. You'll
simply need to arrange your furnishings in a way that
kindles conversation. Here's how:

Conversation flows easily when people aren't shouting
across a room, so pull your pieces away from the wall.
Chairs and sofas can sit directly opposite each other or
can be gently angled toward a center spot. Anchor the
grouping by arranging it around a focal point -- either a
fireplace, window, or attractive storage piece -- and unite
the area with a rug. For added interest, arrange artwork or
collections around the focal point and on
coffee and end tables. These pieces can actually serve as
conversation starters!

Tips for Arranging a Conversation Grouping

· Find or create a focal point to anchor your
conversation grouping. A focal point is something that
draws attention to the area, perhaps a fireplace or a large
window or entertainment center. The focal point should be
against a wall.
· Pull your furnishings away from the walls to create an
intimate grouping. It's hard to converse when you have to
shout across the room.
· Place chairs no more than 8 feet apart to encourage
conversation - in fact, closer is better.
· Position a table within reach of every seating piece
to make it easier to handle a cup of tea or glass of wine.
You'll also want a lamp to light each seating area.
· Allow ample legroom between seating pieces and coffee
tables; 14 to 18 inches is a good measure.
· Select side tables that stand as high as the arm of
the sofa or chair they're serving.
· Finally, position your conversation grouping so that
there's room for people to walk through the room without
passing through it. Traffic "lanes" several feet wide are
the most comfortable.
