Beginning with the wallpaper, a deep green toile with a floral fruit design for the dining room or rose bud floral wallpaper for a guest room would be a good foundation for a beautiful Victorian setting. If you prefer to stay away from a floral design, then select one of the many damask and stripe or paisley wallpapers with colors that you can carry through in the accessories.
Use wallpaper borders to contrast or complement the walls. A lavender rose print floral border with a lavender damask wallpaper is perfect for a guest room. Make sure to place some lavender scented candles, oils and potpourri in the room. The scent creates a feeling of deep calm. It is great for tired guests who have traveled a long way to visit!
Polyester and cotton velvet dressing for your windows in burgundy is the perfect solution if you want to warm up a room. Select the rich, darker tones of burgundy, purple, blue or green, along with a heavier weight fabric for this type of look. For instance, jacquard-woven chenille in olive green with a gold bullion fringe is a good selection.
Next, carpeting is available in many styles and colors. For the bedroom or powder room, a lacey throw carpet covered with roses will be dainty and also look great with the contrasting damask and stripe sage green and old rose wallpaper. Matching the wallpaper border and the carpet is one more way to blend carpet pattern with the rest of the room.
Another aspect of creating the look that you want is to select the appropriate furniture for the décor. For a bedroom or sunroom, a half round, white vanity table, adorned with a plant or antique perfume bottles, will accent the darker colors of the curtains, wallpaper and rug that you have chosen. Place an oval shaped mirror and sconces, also in white above the table, to complete the grouping.
The furniture of the Victorian parlor was intricately carved with a polished finish. Graceful scrolls, flowers and fruits adorned the arms and back of sofas and chairs. The heavily carved medallion back is the most distinctive characteristic of the Victorian sofa. A dark fruitwood, mahogany, antique gold or white gold were used. The button tufting on the sofas and marble tops on tables made a parlor authentically Victorian.
The fainting sofa, reminiscent of such classics as “Gone With The Wind”, was essential for a graceful place to recline in a formal setting. Though perhaps less well-known, the Circular sofa is a standard of the Victorian style and is perfect for a large parlor or a sun room.
In the bedroom, add the charm of lace or crochet bedding on an iron and brass bed finished with a distressed look. A reproduction oil lamp with two glass globes on the nightstand will complement a traditional Aubusson rug that features a central floral medallion with lovely floral, and graceful scrolls.
Candles play a big role in this décor. Displaying the candles decoratively with wall sconces will add light as well as accent the room. Choose deep, dramatic colors to enhance those that are in the wallpaper or rug. The Diamond Marble Candle Assortment (01045) and Pearlized Gold Fragrance Lamp (03375) add a distinctive touch.
A sconce with a wide drip plate for a three inch diameter pillar or ball candle will reflect the light. Use a pair of sconces to complement a picture or mirror, such as the Regina Ornamental Mirror (78005).
The Victorian look can be carried through to your outdoor patio, too. The chairs and loveseats have the Victorian style, higher back. Graceful Garden Statues in resin are placed all over the yard. Gazebos are great for outdoor entertainment. Picnics were a great tradition in the Victorian age. Families and friends gathered frequently in nearby parks to enjoy themselves.
If you want your doors and windows to have the vintage look, purchase authentic windows and doors that have been recovered from homes that have been demolished or redone.
There are many more decorating ideas for a Victorian style room or home. Have fun making your selections then relax and enjoy the romantic, Victorian look that you have chosen. More importantly, make your home a place where everyone feels comfortable and welcome.
